第二年开始，玩家可以在皮埃尔的杂货店购买水稻发芽，水稻发芽有时会出现在旅行货车的货物中。钓鱼宝箱、远古斑点（春季}都有几率出现水稻发芽。出现在矿井的蛆（掉落几率为10%），突变虫穴或骷髅洞穴（史前层）的突变蛆都有概率掉落水稻发芽。幽灵头骨在冬季有21.43%的几率掉落水稻发芽。荒原魔像在春季有6.25%的几率掉落水稻发芽。同样地，也可以使用种子生产器制作水稻发芽。
水稻发芽可以种植在大多数的农田里面，同其他作物一样，每天持续浇水可以让水稻在8天内成熟。Rice Shoots planted in most farm tiles take 8 days to mature with watering each day, as with other crops. However, Rice Shoots planted within 3 tiles of a Farm Pond in any direction are considered to be irrigated, as in a rice paddy. Paddies need not be continuous with each other or adjacent to a pond in order to count as irrigated. Irrigated Rice Shoots take only 6 days to mature and do not require watering.

When harvested, each Rice Shoot gives one Unmilled Rice, with a 10% chance of one or more extra rice (0.11 more rice on average).[1]

This repeats until the random number is greater than or equal to 0.1, at which point the chance for an extra Unmilled Rice ends. This, on average, will give 0.11 extra Unmilled Rice.
